Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN – National Institute for Nuclear Physics) chooses Musola Metalli as its supplier

The aluminium sheets supplied by Musola Metalli will be used for the new nuclear accelerator at the INFN.

INFN Legnaro

Recently, Musola Metalli was chosen by the INFN of Legnaro as a supplier of metals and 6082 aluminium sheets EN 573-3. The material will be used for the construction of some components of the new particle accelerator.

The sheets are used to build components for vacuum equipment that will be inside the particle accelerator. The research center of Legnaro collaborates with the research center of Gran Sasso and the CERN in Geneve in the study of subatomic particles that composes matter.

The laboratories in Legnaro were founded in 1968 as an international physics center and for the application of nuclear technologies. Today there are about 250 people specialized in the construction of nuclear particle accelerators and gamma radiation detectors.

All researches of the INFN are then employed in many fields, such as medicine, arts, history, etc.

“SPES”: a new project to cure humas and to study the universe

The new particle accelerator, a P70 cyclotron installed in the laboratories of Legnaro (LNL), INFN of Legnaro, is part of the ambitious project SPES, “Selective Production of Exotic Species”.

“The cyclotron here in the laboratories of Legnaro – says Giovanni Fiorentini, director of LNL – is a tool in which, every second, ten million billion protons are accelerated up to seventy million Volt, and that the first part of SPES, a project that will help cure humans and study the universe”

Exotic nucleus produced by the accelerator will be used to create new radiopharmaceuticals.

Installation of P70 cyclotron

The P70 cyclotron, with a weight of 180 tons, was lifted by a crane on the roof of a four-floor building and then lowered in the subsoil. You can see below a video of the entire process.

Being chosen as a supplier of the INFN is an important value added. We believe we were chosen because of our wide availability of materials and the possibility of providing declarations. Moreover, because of our quality system management (ISO 9001 norm) and the ability of managing orders with fast deliveries.
